Ensuring Weekly Payments Are Made

After being injured at work, a worker had their claim provisionally accepted in early April this year. This meant they were entitled to receive weekly compensation payments.

Despite following up with both their employer and the insurer, the payments were not made.

The delay placed the worker under serious financial pressure. They had rent due, were supporting a child, and the uncertainty was adding further stress during their recovery period.

The IRO’s service

The worker contacted the Independent Review Office (IRO).

The IRO reviewed the complaint and explained that, under the workers compensation guidelines, it is the insurer’s responsibility to make sure weekly payments are received on time by injured workers.

The IRO contacted the insurer and asked that payment be made urgently, including paying the worker directly if needed.

How the IRO provided support

The outcome

Following IRO’s involvement, the insurer acted promptly and arranged for the outstanding payments to be made to the worker.

Why this matters

The IRO’s support meant the worker could meet their financial obligations, including paying the rent, and helped reduce some of the stress impacting their recovery.

This outcome demonstrates how the IRO can assist injured workers to access the support they are entitled to when they need it most.
