Engaging medical report providers
IRO Approved Lawyers may obtain medical and related evidence as part of work funded under the Independent Legal Assistance and Review Service (ILARS).
Funding for these costs (disbursements) is only available where it meets the requirements of the ILARS Funding Guidelines.
Approved Lawyers may use medical report providers (MRPs) to arrange or obtain medical evidence to:
- support a workers compensation claim, or
- challenge an insurer’s decision.
Types of disbursements
Disbursements obtained through MRPs may include:
- clinical notes
- treating doctor reports
- medicolegal reports
Disbursements must be reasonable, necessary and covered by an approved ILARS grant.
Payment
The IRO may pay some MRPs directly for disbursements where:
- the service is approved under an ILARS grant, and
- the cost complies with the ILARS Funding Guidelines.
The IRO will not pay disbursements that do not meet these requirements.

Fees
Fees for disbursements are set out in the ILARS Funding Guidelines.
Approved Lawyers must ensure:
- fees do not exceed the gazetted rates
- GST and any service fees charged by MRPs are paid
The IRO will not fund costs that exceed approved rates or fall outside the Guidelines.
